Description:

At AOL, we want to bring people closer to the things that matter, while helping them discover and share stories and information that color their lives, especially when it comes to video. The AOL On Network is a new video platform that offers premium content across 14 content channels including food, business, entertainment, style, tech, travel, health and others, and reaches nearly 57 million U.S. consumers.

The AOL On Network features original shows as well as partner content from a library of over 320,000 high quality, short-form videos created by more than 1,000 premier publishers. Through AOL On, this content is available across hundreds of premium destination sites as well as AOL’s owned and operated properties.

The Software Engineer will be part of the video engineering team that will be responsible for delivering AOL content to televisions, other “over the top” (OTT) and mobile devices. The engineer will fully leverage his/her skill set in the development, deployment and operations of technologies for delivering content into users’ living rooms across multiple devices ranging from Android to Xbox. Among the engineering challenges this position will face is the fragmented delivery of content across multiple platforms, unifying the backend content infrastructure and creating compelling user experiences in a nascent market. This job is for someone who likes to work in a startup environment, can work independently, and proactively solves problems.

Responsibilities:

-Develop software in support of the project goals of AOL On.
-Well versed with both front end and back end technologies to implement full delivery solutions for several platforms.
-Be able to work with cross functional teams ranging from business teams, design, as well as partner companies to deliver world class apps.
-Gather requirements from stakeholders and perform critical analysis of the stated needs. Dealing with ambiguity is key in a developing market, so if you expect comprehensive requirements and a rigid environment, this is not for you.
-Provide technical support of developed applications. You will be expected to own the support of each of the platforms you develop.
-Be able to travel occasionally to other AOL offices in the U.S. (2 times/year at most)

Skills Required:

-Bachelor in Computer Science, Mathematics, or the like. Masters preferred.
-5+ years of related engineering experience
-Experience with designing online experiences for video and video advertising. Apps experience is req’d.
-Strong interest in mobile, consumer electronics and the OTT experience
-Excellent programming skills. Code must be clear and concise, and must always communicate. We expect software engineers to be able to transcend language and use the best tools for their assigned projects. Specific language experience is less important, but a background in C/C++, Java, Javascript along with knowledge of scripting in Ruby, Python, Perl, and/or bash will be helpful.
-Solid understanding of Unix/Linux administration and deploying backend processes in that environment.
-Excellent software testing and debugging skills
